FOXTON BOROUGH COUNCIL.
MONTHLY MEETING. The ordinary monthly meeting o) the Foxlon Borough Council was held in the Council Chamber last night. Present: His Worship the Mayor (G. H. Stiles, Ksq.j, and Councillors Coley, Ross, Stewart, Robinson, Gibbs, Rimmer, Levett, Speirs and Adams. Correspondence was read and dealt with as under:—
From Hayward’s Pictures, Ltd., asking that in the event of the firm booking the proposed new hall one night per week for a certain period, would the Council be prepared lo inslal electricity' for the projection of pictures.—Decided on the motion of Cr Robinson, seconded by Cr Gibbs, that the Council cannot instal electricity in the proposed Town Kali, and that a reply be sent on these lines. From Mr P. Lumsdeu, drawing attention lo the state of the footpath in front of the Mauawatu Hotel, and asking that same be attended to.—Proposed by Cr Speirs, and seconded by Cr Rimmer, that a kerbing be put in front of the gateway at the Manawarn Hotel, and that a crossing be put in at the expense of the proprietor, and that the Council attend to the footway at the earliest opportunity'.
From Mr T. Ward, asking that as he was entitled lo one month’s notice before vacating the pound cottage, that the rent for the balance of the time he paid lo him. —Received.
From the Secretary of the Fox ton Harbour Board, advising tha. according to die Harbours Act Amendment, the two Boston representatives on the Board were to be elected by the electors at the same time as the Borough elections. — Proposed by Cr Coley, seconded by Cr Ross, that the Returning Officer be instructed to hold an election for two members of the Foxtou Harbour Board, and to send the account for proportionate amount to the Harbour Board in accordance with the provisions of the Harbours Amendment Act, rqro.
From the Valuer-General, advising that the work of revising the valuations of the Borough was now being carried out, and he anticipated to be in a position to supply a new roll for the ensuing year’s rating.—Received. From Messrs J. and J. Braddock, advising that the retort bench for the gas works would be ready for shipping about the first week in January. —Received. Accounts amounting to ,£432 6s 6d were passed lor payment. The Mayor proposed, and it was seconded by Cr Rimmer, that the Town Clerk be instructed to call a parade of all licensed vehicles in front of the Council Chamber on a date to be fixed by him in order to see that Section 77 of the Bylaws is complied with, and also to arrange for the correct numbering of the said vehicles. The section referred to reads: “ The owner of every cart, dray, or waggon that is plying for hire, that shall be driven along any street or public place within the Borough, shall cause his name and residence to be painted in a legible and permanent manner on the right or off side of such vehicle, in letters of at least one inch in length, also number ot license.” In speaking to the motion, the Mayor said that of late there had been a number of fresh carriers plying for hire, and there was a possibility that some were not licensed. He thought it would be wise to call them all together and see that the by-law is complied with. There were some at present that were not numbered, and this required attending to. The motion was carried.
The Inspector of Nuisances reported that he had inspected all premises in Main street and those in the surrounding thickly-popu-lated streets, < and they were all now fairly clean. The very bad state of the roads at the present time was brought up, and there was a discussion ou the question of the most suitable metal lor repairing purposes. It was moved by Cr Coley, and seconded by Cr Ross, that tenders be called for the next monthly meeting for the supply of, say, 500 yards of metal from Robinson’s or Nye’s pit. As au amendment, Cr Gibbs moved and Cr Robinson seconded, that alternate tenders be invited for the supply of 500 yards of metal from Robinson’s pit, Palmerston North pit metal, and Jackeytown river bed metal. Tenders to be in within a fortnight. Ou being put, the amendment was carried. The Council rose at y. 15 p.m.
