Inaha Hack Flat.—Attention 1, Contralto 2, Con the Shaughran 3. Time, imin r6sec. POVERTY BAY MEETING. The annual meeting of the Poverty Bay Turf Club was commenced on Thursday in fine weather. The attendance was large and the racing throughout was ot an interesting nature. The sum ot >£7116 was put through the totalisator, as against £SXOO on the first day of last year. NOTES. Mendip has been re-haudicapped in the Taranaki Cup with a iTlbs penalty, bringing his impost to Bst. rolhs.
Last season all the horses owned by the King were raced in the name of Lord Derby, but this year they will carry the Royal colours. It is said that an offer of ,£1250 was made for the New Zealand mare Crucinella when she was in Tasmania, but it was refused. Parable, Woodhey and Te Puia the placed horses in the last Woodville Cup are among the field engaged in the same race on the 22nd inst.
Racing appears to be growing in popularity again in Tasmania. The T.R.C. made a profit of ,£2OOO over the recent cup meeting.
Genius, who won the Post Handicap at Riccarton last Saturday, has been purchased by Mr H. Barlow. The price mentioned was ,£6oo. The Argentine J.C. is a very rich body, and it is goiug to build a club house at a cost of ,£So,ooo, notwithstanding that the existing one is described by those who have seen it as the finest in the world-
The A.J.C. had to postpone their last meeting at Randwick on account of rain. It is some thirty-live years since a postponement by the Sydney Club last occurred.
The horses engaged in the principal iv. .u the forthcoming Woodville meeting include ; Sandstream (Wairarapa Cup), F'liugot (Foxtou Cup), Vi (Ashhurst Cup), and Passive (Pahiatua Cup). The locally-owned horses The Rover and Waipaku have nominated for the Woodville Cup, to be ruu at the W.U.J.C. meeting ou the 22nd inst. The former has been allotted 6st. 71b., and the latter yst. 11 lb. Lady Olga, a daughter of Merriwee and Olga, won the Flying Handicap at the Queensland Turf Club’s meeting on 28th January. The New Zealand bred filly started lavourite in a field ot thirteen and won easily. After the local meeting Mr J. Colemau disposed of Shannon Lass at a substantial profit to what he paid for her to Mr Fh H. Davis, of Greymouth. The Merriwee mare was shipped to the coast last Saturday.
The Argentine Jockey Club's big race, the value of which was ,£rr,soo, was won by Seuor Ignacis Correase’s mare Sibila. The mare must be a really good one, as she has already won ,£28,788 in stake money.
