The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, January 31, 1911. NOTES AND COMMENTS.

Ratepayers are now made aware of the Council’s intention in respect to the erection of a Municipal Town Hall for Foxton. The original intention of the Council was to borrow ,£2500 to cover the cost of tlie building, but it was ascertained that the section on which the building is to be erected is not large enough and in order to provide ample room it was decided to acquire hi adjoining section. The site next to the fire bell, at th« intersection of Main Street and the Avenue, is perhaps the most conveniently situated in the borough and should meet with universal approval. So far as we are able to gather there will be very little opposition to the Council’s proposals. It would be difficult to find any grounds for opposition other than personal. It was rumoured that unless the site of the old hall was decided upon another hall would be erected by private enterprise, but we do not think any one would be so foolish as to carry such at hreat into execution. A hall erected by the people, for the people, would command the greater patronage. Cr. Speirs quoted one influential ratepayer who would oppose the loan if it exceeded ,£2,500. This was the figure we previously said the ratepayers should not exceed, but circumstances have arisen which make it imperative to spring the extra ,£3OO if the present excellent site is to be retained. Further, the extra sum mentioned, as explained by, the Mayor, would not only provide its own interest but would, in a measure, lighten the burden of the loan. We hope the Council will lose no time in submitting the proposals to the ratepayers, who, we feel sure, will endorse what has been done.
