KING LEOPOLD AND THE CONGO.
STRANGE STORY OF LEOPOLD OF BELGIUM. LONDON, Jan. 21. The Pall Mall Gazette publishes a .statement that the late King Leopold of Belgium was so exasperated and alarmed at the humanitarian agitation concerning the Congo cruelties that he appealed to Germany for protection, and agreed to an invasion of France through Belgium. This plan, after the death of Leopold, fell into hands which communicated it to France. Thu Gazette’s correspondent declares that the experienced chiefs of the diplomatic services of the Continent believe the rumour to be true.
