OBITUARY.
MARK NF.WTH—B4 YFARS. The ranks of the early pioneers are gradually being thinned out and there are now few settlers left who saw the stirring times of the ’forties and early ’fifties. Another pioneer, in the person of Mark Newth, passed away at his sou’s residence, c.uiey Street, Foxton, at 5 a.m. on Monday, at the ripe age of' 84 years. Although the late Mr Newth was not wellknown in this district, having only arrived here to settle with his sons about eight years ago he was a well-known figure in Waimea West, Nelson, ever since the early ’forties. Mr Newth saw the light of day in Wootton Bassett, Wiltshire, England, in 1827. His father came out to the Dominion with one of the first immigrant ships under the New Zealand Land Company and shortly after deceased, then a youth of 15, followed in the “ Lloyd’s,” which arrived in 1842. Together with his father he cultivated an extensive hop farm, which he personally supervised until coming to this district. In IS4B he married Harriet Norris who predeceased him about 15 years ago. There were six sons and two daughters of the marriage, namely, Messrs John Newth, Mayor of Waihi, James, William, Winfield of this district and Albert, of Waimea West, and Mrs R. Andrew of Cauvastown, Marlborough, and Miss Newth of Foxton. There are also 40 grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Up to the time of his death the old gentleman never had a serious illness. On Sunday night he was cheerful and appeared to be in good health and talked of a journey he was going to Nelson on Wednesday. The immediate cause of death was heart failure.
