FOXTON RACING CLUB’S ANNUAL MEETING. The above Club’s animal meeting to be held on January 21st and 23rd, promises to be a very successful one. Everything is being done by the stewards and secretary to assure a successful gathering, and a glance at the nominations, which appeared in our last issue, shows an increase of 45 on last year. The highest number of nominations received previously was 212, so this year’s show an increase of 21 over the previous record year. Weights are to be declared on January nth, and acceptances close on Wednesday, January 18th, at 9 p.m. The Club’s caretaker is busy preparing the course and hopes to have it in first-class order on the eventful days, aud if the Club is favoured with fine weather the meeting should constitute a record.
The locally owned horse, The Rover, has nominated for the Wellington Cup. The well-known and highly successful horseman, W. Young, was married at Auckland yesterday. Diabolo and Rbonite have been scratched for all engagements at the Wellington Racing Club’s meeting. Mr W. S. Davidson, of Gisborne, owner of the racehorse Goldfinder, has just refused two thousand guineas for the colt. The veteran Shrapnel Shell is being kept moving on the Devin tracks. All going well the gelding will be a competitor at the local meeting. Sporting folk are anxiously awaiting the result of the inquiry by the stewards of the W.R.C., with regard to some unsatisfactory riding at their recent meeting. Ascalon and Hermia are getting through excellent training work on Mr McDonald’s private tracks at Devin. The pair have some meritorious performances to their credit. A peculiar incident occurred at the recent Rangitikei meeting, the placed horses in the Cup being ridden by the Young Bros., the oldest, W. Young, riding the winner. The Wairarapa Daily News understands that Sid Reid has closed with an offer to go to iluenos Aires to ride the horses of three stables there. He will not be asked to ride less than Bst, He is to get a retaining fee and 10 per cent, of all winnings. The Auckland riding Whittaker is proving a “perfect terror” at the small meetings. He was presented by the H.R.C. with a goldmounted whip on account of winning six events, and nearly equalled the performance at the Thames meeting on the first day, as he steered five to victory.
