CRICKET.

The match played at Shannon on Saturday between a combined team from Foxton and a team from the Shannon Club resulted in a win for Shannon by 24 runs on the first innings.

The Foxton team was not the strongest that could be got together on account of several of the leading players being unable to make the trip, but it was a fair team and it was anticipated they would put up a good game. The game was commenced about three o’clock, W. Tremewan winning the toss from Robinson, elected to bat. They opened very badly, A, Tremewan being bowled with the score at 2, and two more wickets fell after another couple had been added. W. Tremewan and Foster then got together and the latter held up his wicket whilst Shannon’s captain put on the runs. The scoring was not fast, Tremewan being content with only hitting at anything off the wicket. Fifteen overs were bowled before these batsmen were separated, Foster being caught at mid-off. Tremewan was batting well and commenced to force the game, scoring rather freely off Howe. The other batsmen made no stand at all and when the last wicket fell the score was 68, of which Tremewan contributed 41 not out. He gave a very good display of batting, but on one occasion was rather badly missed at long-off. The Foxton bowling was good, but a mistake was made in not putting McMurray on earlier. Had he gone on after the first three or four overs, Shannon’s total would not have reached the amount it did.

To score 68 does not appear to be a very big task, but Fox ton were not equal to it and were only able to put on 44. None of the batsmen reaching double figures, the top scorer being Ward with a score ot 8.

In fielding Shannon gave a better display than the Foxtonians, although the latter fielded better than is usually the case. After the match the visiting team were entertained at tea by the local team, and afterwards left for home very well satisfied with the treatment received at the hands of the Shannon cricketers, who are real good sports. A return match will be played at Foxton later in the season.
