BOWLING.

The green is being well patronised and some very interesting games have been played. A number of beginners are showing great promise.

Modern readers of history often allude to the fact that Drake insisted upon playing the last head of a game of bowls even when the Spanish Amada was in sight of the English coast. Wonder and admiration is expressed at the Admiral’s sang froid. It was really the fascination of the game which held him. A parallel case is reported from Invercargill, where a man who was playing bowls received a message that a house owned by him was 011 fire. His equanimity was undisturbed. “Sorry I can’t come right away, but the fact is we’re playing bowls, and I must finish the game.” Having done which, he proceeded to the scene of the fire and found that the house had been saved, and only slightly damaged.
