RECENT STORM.
A very heavy rain storm passed over this district on Thursday night. Yesterday morning a thunderstorm broke over the town and torrents of rain fell. The water channels and creeks were soon flooded. Very little damage was done. The downpour was appreciated in most quarters. At Palmerston N. yesterday a whirlwind of considerable proportions, in the vicinity of Hokowhitu, caused a goo I deal of excitement. It travelled at tornado speed, and carried iron and rubbish heavenward in its swirl. Fences were levelled, a roof taken off a stable, and a verandah of a dwelling wrecked. The thunderstorm was the severest known there for many years. Stony Creek experienced the severity of the hailstorm, and much damage was done to fruit crops and gardens. At Gisborne, a large macrocarpa tree at Whatupoko was stripped of its bark and set alight. f
