CRICKET.

The first match of the local Association’s competition for the Austin Shield was played on the Park pitch yesterday afternoon, when Himatangi, last year’s Shield winners, met, and on the

day’s play, simply outclassed the Foxton Club’s representatives.

Foxton won the toss and sent Htmatangi to the wickets, Redgrave and Barber facing the bowling of Munro and Love. The first four wickets, including Redgrave, were secured at a cost of 28 runs, but the local team’s skipper then made the mistake of changing the bowling. Both Love and Munro were bowling well, and although the latter was not getting wickets he was getting into his length, and very few runs were being scored off him. Had these bowlers been kept on longer, no doubt Hiraatangi’s score would not have reached the total it d id. Despite continual changes in the bowling, it was not until the score had reached 117 that the last man was disposed ot. Of the local bowlers, Love and Howe were the most successful. At the conclusion of Himatangi’s innings an adjournment was made for afternoon tea, which was supplied by the local team. Foxton opened their innings disastrously, Watson being run out before a run had been scored, and the second wicket fell with the score at 7. None of the batsmen were at all at home with the bowling of Redgrave and Bethuue, and the whole team was disposed of for the ridiculously small total of 32, leaving last year’s shield winners victorious by 85 runs.
