A meeting of the above was held last night in the old school house. Present :—Messrs Horn' blow (chairman), Betty (secretary), Bullard, Coley, Henderson, Alex. Speirs, and Hussey. An apology was received from Rev Mr Aitkeu. Application was received from the Horticultural Society for the use of the old school building in which to hold the Spring Show this week. —The application was granted unanimously. The head teacher’s report was read and received. The average attendance for the past four weeks was, 333-5, 345-5, 337'3. 3347For the whole period it was 337-75 out of an average roll number of 388-25. The present roll number is 397. The attendance for the year has been approximately 320, and if the present attendance is maintained to the end of the year the school will be entitled to the services of another assistant. The report stated that from the above it will be seen that the school has been understaffed during the year. The animal inspection visit took place on October 27th, and was conducted by Chief-Inspector Braik and Inspector Strong. Several pupils were successful in obtaining prizes at the recent show held in Palmerston. Several repairs had been suggested to the visiting committee. The Chairman remarked that the Board should be approached to urge upon the Department the necessity of providing training for pupil teachers before appointing them to schools. The head teacher said that owing to the destruction of the Public Hall the school concert would have to be abandoned this year. The staff, however, suggested that a lloral fete, exhibition of school work and sale be held in the old school ou Wednesday, 21 st December, and that the presentation ol prizes also take place on that date. The head teacher added that if the committee did the canvassing the teaching staff would carry out the other details. The committee unanimously adopted the suggestion, and the Chairman and Messrs Alex. Speirs and Coley were appointed a committee to canvass townspeople for subscriptions. Other details were left in the hands of the head teacher. The Inspector’s report was received, and was considered satisfactory. The singing was satisfactorily commented upon, also physical exercises. Referring to the school gardens, the report stated “ they presented a splendid appearance. We have not seen finer work done in this direction.” Referring to the tone of the school, the report stated that “ there is an inclination on the part of the pupils of some classes to trifle and shirk effort. This tendency should be kept in check, and good habits required from all. The present organisation does not admit the headmaster giving so much attention to this matter as is required, but with the addition of another certificated teacher to the staff at the beginning of the year, he will have more time at his disposal to take it in hand.” Criticism of the several classes and methods of teaching was given in detail. The pupil teachers were reported as giving earnest heed to their class work and their studies, Messrs Betty and Bullard were appointed visitors for the month, and certain repairs authorised, and the meeting rose.
