TOWN CLERK’S REPORT.
The Town Clerk submitted the following report at last night’s Borough Council meeting:— “ There is very little to for the past mouth. The men have been engaged in spreading and breaking the last of the metal from Jackeytown—some 392 yards in all have come to hand—and in screening limestone, continuing the crown of Main street with the rough limestone and metal, which is now carried as far as the Awahou drain. The lower end of the street is to be done before next winter. One of the roadmen — Huntley—was laid up for some time with lumbago, and is now taking the baths at Rotorua. Two lots of coal —some 43 tons —have been placed in the yard at the Borough gas works, and I would recommend that the Council build a coal shed in front ot the present retort house, las the whole of the present retort house will be required to accommodate the new bench ot retorts ordered, and that a 6 foot iron fence be erected round the section to prevent leakage. Acting upon instructions from the Mayor, I purchased sample gas fittings and globes for the show room. These came to hand on Saturday, and will be marked off and hung up as soon as possibW The Council met at the sanitation reserve, and after consideration decided that the night soil must be carried further back and buried, and in order to meet the extra work the nightman’s wages be increased by los per week.
