THE MASTERTON SEAT.
Masterton, Oct. 24. Mr George R. Sykes, a wellknown farmer of Upper Plain, Masterton, has decided to stand as an Opposition candidate at the next general election against Mr A. W. Hogg (the present member) for the Masterton seat. In consequence of this decision, Mr Sykes to-day resigned the secretaryship of the Masterton Agricultural and Pastoral Association, a position he has ably filled for many years. Mr C. A. Pownall, a local solicitor, who has occupied the Mayoral chair for seven or eight years, and Mr J. C. Cooper are also practically certain to stand for the seat. The next contest for Masterton promises to be the most interesting since the days when the names of Messrs Beetham, Bunny and Hawkins figured largely in Wairarapa politics,
