THE LABOUR PLATFORM
On the eve of the recent elections, Mr McGowan issued the following manifesto: — “ The Labour Party stands for the interests of the whole of the people as against a class. The aim and object of Federal and State Parliaments is the same —to build up a great and enlightened people
“ By throwing open the locked lands of this Slate to the people of this State, and encouraging immigration when the land is thus available, so that every acre of agricultural laud shall be occupied by farmers in living areas. “ By pushing forward railways through Crown land and establishing seaports along our coastline, and railway communication to these ports, so that produce may be taken to the nearest port and many industrial centres be established.
“ By encouraging manufacturers and subsidiary industries through the State ownership of coal and iron—the bases ol industries — which could be supplied by the State at cost price and thus make room for hundreds of thousands of industrial workers in the secondary industries, and ” By preventing rings, trusts, and combines from exploiting the lood and necessaries of the people. “ By establishing a free university to which access shall be brains and merit alone, through a complete bursary system, and by establishing a system of continuation trade and commercial schools for the scientific and technical instruction of the future industrial workers ol this State. “ I offer the services of myself and party to the people of New South Wales for the purpose of carrying out these proposals.’
Mr McGovveu, who is 55 years of age, has been leader of the labour Party in New South Wales since 1894. He is a boilermaker by trade. Mr McGoweu was one of the founders of the eight-hour system in New South Wales, and was instrumental in securing the system in the railway service.
