WANGANUI WINS THE DOUBLE. Ballarat, Oct. 23, At the Ballarat Baud Contest the competitions resulted as follows : “ A ” Grade Selections. Wanganui ... ... 1 Pj ah ran ... ••• 2 Col ling wood ... 3 Quickstep Wanganui 1 Ballarat ... ... 2 Wanganui’s performance was a splendid one. Ballarat, Oct. 24. Wanganui’s win was a very popular one. The points scored were; — Wanganui.—Test, 174 ; owu choice, 222. Prahan, 208 and 180. Collingwood, 198 and 182. Quickstep. Wanganui, 153 ; Prout’s, 152 ; Ballarat City, 145. B Grade selections were won by Geelong Harbour Trust Baud, and the quickstep by Prout’s.
C Grade selections were won by Geelong Harbour Trust and the Quickstep by Geelong Town. Melbourne, Oct. 24.
Mr Short, the King’s Trumpeter, who was the adjudicator at the Ballarat competitions, stated that he would like to have the Wanganui band engaged for twelve months to illustrate the kind of musical material available in Australasia.
“ Wanganui’s performance was splendid,” was the judge’s comment.
The winning band has been offered the privilege of playing at the Melbourne Cup Race Meeting, for which it will receive ,£IOO.
Three New Zealanders were among the first four placed men in the cornet solo competition. Code (Victoria) came first, Buckley (Wanganui) second, Pheloung (Sydney) third, and McGrath (Wanganui) fourth. Pheloung is a native of Oamaru, but has been in Australia for some years.
