TO THE SOUTH POLE.

Melbourne, October 13

The Antarctic exploring ship Terra Nova arrived here yesterday, after a good trip from Capetown.

Captain Scott, who was interviewed, stated that he hopes to leave for New Zealand on Saturday. It is important that he should reach there quickly, as stores have to be collected and ponies broken in. He hopes to leave New Zealand at the end of next month, and to reach McMurdo Sound, where the first depot will be made, at the end of December.

The expedition will be divided into two parties, the western and larger having its headquarters at McMurdo Sound, and the Eastward party at King Edward’s Land. From one of these points Captain Scott will make a dash for the Pole about the end of October next year. He expects to reach the upper plateau early in December, and, if possible, the Pole on the 22nd of that month, when the sun achieves its maximum altitude. Sir Ernest Shackleton’s route will be followed, with variations.

Lieutenant Evans will lead the Western and Lieutenant Campbell the eastern party. Both are experienced Navy officers.
