BOROUGH FINANCES.
TREASURER’S REPORT. The Treasurer’s statement submitted at last night’s Council meeting was as follows : The sum of ,£462 5s 8d has been paid into the district fund account, and into the cemetery account since the last monthlv meeting of the Council, The Bank balances this day were: District fund account ,£IBB 6s 3d, and cemetery account 12s 6d, both to credit, and the balances of the various separate accounts are as follows :—ln credit: Library account, £2 17s gd ; cemetery account, £sl 123 6d ; sanitation account, 10s 2d; interest account, ,£77 4s 6d. Accounts overdrawn : General account, 4s 5d ; reserves account, £26 4s 3d. Up to the present we have expended on roads, streets and drains xßs 3d, as against ns Sd for a corresponding period of last year. The total amount taken for roads and streets last year was an estimate of ,£431 4s nd being expended in the last six months, and should we spend at the same rate during the current six months, our expenditure for the present year would reach ,£1036 3s 4d on road's and streets, or 3s 4d in excess of estimates. It is therefore apparent that the most rigid economy must be observed during the rest of the year, and I have to recommend that the services of the extra roadmen taken on in June last be dispensed with. There are a considerable amount of rates outstanding, and proceedings against defaulters are now being taken.
