A MINISTERIAL APOLOGIST.
Our Palmerston morning contemporary commenting on the attitude of the Hon. Mr Millar towards the extension of the Foxtou-Saudon tram to Greatford says: “This paper pointed out some time ago that the State, as owner of the railways, must sooner or latter take up the attitude which all railway owners have to take up against the cutting in on their trade, and that Foxton would not be allowed by the Levin-Greatford or otherwise to cut out the most profitable portion of the business at this end of the trunk line Of course it is unfortunate for Foxton, and the people who are trying their best to “side track ’’Palmerston, but it is mighty fortunate for Palmerston and the Dominion as a whole, every individual which has a share in the railways. A paper which has steadily preferred the interests of Foxton to those of Palmerston declares that Mr Millar’s action “is not a creditable one,’’ and “ ventures to think ” that it will be “ remembered at the ballot box ’’ —svhich ballot box ; that ol Palmerston ? —and the Dominion quite mistakenly declares “ the Manawatu district ” to be clamouring for the Levin-Greatford deviation, whereas it is the Rangitikei district which is urging that, and to some extent in order to get a “back hander” at Palmerston and Feilding.”
