OROUA DOWNS SOCIAL CLUB.

ANNUAL CONCERT. The aunual concert and dance inaugurated by the Oroua Downs Social Club took place in Hammond’s Hall last night and was a great success. The first portion of the programme consisted of miscellaneous items; alter the interval a minstrel entertainment was submitted. Mr Brady occupied the chair for the former and Miss Witton made a charming interlocutor for the latter. The programme opened with an overture (pianoforte) by Mesdames Scott. Humorous character songs were contributed by Messrs Henry and Bethune and they fairly “ brought down the house.” Mr W. Penny played two violin solos , Messrs Clemett and Hornblow recited ; Miss Witton contributed a vocal item ; Master Halcrow received a great ovation for his cleverly executed hornpipe and in response to a vociferous encore the Chairman announced that the youthful artist “ was not winded but the wind was out of him ! ” Subsequently the item was repeated. Mr McMurray caused considerable amusement with his two dolls and he had to repeat the clever performance. The Chairman thanked the performers and the public on behalf of the club. Messrs Witton Bros, (tambos.), Christeson and Algar (bones) were the coloured gentlemen in the minstrel group, and nicely attired and on either side of the interlocutor (Miss Witton) were the little Misses Kitty Brady and Nellie Roberts. Mrs Algar presided at the piano. The local hits and lunny stories of the corner men created plenty of fun. The songs and choruses were sparkling. A special word of praise must be given to Miss Kitty Bradey for her vocal effort, “ Mammy’s Baby Coon.” A farce entitled the “Johnson-Jeffries Cinematograph,” sent the audience home in good humour. A dance followed the entertainment, and was well patronised. Mr Algar, the indefatigable secretary, and his committee, are to be complimented upon the success of their efforts.
