Mr Newman asked the Government whether it is a fact, as stated in the Rangitikei Advocate of the 23rd August, that the Advances to Workers Branch is refusing loans to workers residing in or near the town of Bulls, the departmental reply Invariably being that it is not intended to extend the privileges of this Act to towns of this description, as the security is not good enough, and that the State officers are considering the advisability of striking many of the smaller towns off the list as undesirable places for investment. The Prime Minister replied that it is not the case that Bulls or any of the smaller towns are absolutely barred from participating in the benefits of the New Zealand State-guaranteed Advances Act, but it is considered that the interests of all concerned would be best served by restricting the terms of loans on such securities. Applications for advances in such localities should therefore be deferred until the Department is in a position to make advances for varying periods.
