CYCLING.
TIMARU TO CHRISTCHURCH ROAD RACE. Under favourable weather conditions the eighth cycle road race from Timaru to Christchurch, a distance of 112 miles, was run on Saturday, and resulted in W. Arnst, (St. Albans), 25mm, arriving home first, with C. G. Chapman (Napier), 35mm, second, and A. G. Donald (Palmerston North), aijimin, third- A. B. L. Smith (Linwood), scratch, secured the fastest time, covering the distance in shrs 30mm 27 4 ssec —a record for the race. J. Coulter (Woodville) made the second fastest time. W. Arnst, the winner, is an elder brother of Dick and Jack, of sculling aud cycling fame. He is thirty-one years of age, and rode in the Warrnambool to Melbourne road race in 1903, but meeting with a breakdown was unplaced. Last year he was a competitor in the Timaru to Christchurch race, but though getting off the thirtyfour minutes mark was unplaced. A. B. L. Smith, who established the fastest time, and also the record, lives at Linwood. He is at present the best known road and track cyclist in New Zealand. Last year he secured the fastest time in the race for 1 South Island rider. The great annual Bathurst to Sydney road race took place on Saturday, The winner proved to be F. J. Foxover, a Sydney rider, who started from the 51mm mark. He led practically the whole way, and did the journey in Bhr 2min qsec. F. D. Walcott made the fastest time, viz., yhr zymin rosec. The weather was fine, and the roads in good order.
