HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY.

GENERAE MEETING. Despite the very inclement weather last night, over twenty members, including a fair percentage of ladies, were present at the general meeting of the local Horticultural Society. Mr Alex. Speirs (President) occupied the chair. The meeting was called tor the purpose of electing a secretary, vice Mr Eevett resigned, and to adopt the catalogue for the forthcoming Spring Show. Mr Galland acted as secretary pro tern. Several names were mentioned in connection with the office, but Mr Patterson was finally elected. The new secretary said he would leave no stone unturned to forward the interests of the Society. Mr Patterson, however, objected to hold the dual positions of secretary and treasurer, and Miss Ross was unanimously elected to fill the latter position. Notice of motion was given to amend Rule r, A discussion took place re the judging of table decorations, and it was decided, on the motion of Mrs Greig, that a committee of three ladies be appointed to adjudicate this class, instead of by popular vote. It was also decided that no embellishments be allowed in the decorations.

It was decided to eliminate the dog and poultry classes from this catalogue. The following gentlemen were elected vice-presidents : Messrs Dr Mandl, Stiles, B. G. Gower, Rough and Stewart. On the motion of Mr Galland, it was decided to award prizes as under in each class : One entry, is ; two entries, is-; three entries, is, and a second ol 6d ; four entries, first is 6d, second 6d; five entries, first is 6d, second is; six, first 2s, second is. These prizes will be awarded where there are no specials or points prizes. It was decided to rescind Rule : 5* It was resolved that entries close at 10 p.m. the night before the first day of the show, and that a late fee of 3d per entry be imposed on all entries brought in up to 10 a.m. on the first day of the show. No entries to be received except through the secretary. It was decided to publish in the catalogue the names of members and those who had donated special prizes.

A discussion ensued as to the time when judging should be commenced, and 11.30 a.m, was fixed as the hour. It was decided to open the show at 3 p.m. on the first day and 2.30 p.m, on the second. It was decided that all entries by each exhibitor over six in each class be free. It was decided to recommend to the committee that stewards be selected from the committee and that they be conversant with the rules. The date of the Spring Show was fixed for November 23rd and 24th. A hearty vote of thanks was passed and carried by acclamation to the ladies who so successfully canvassed for special prizes. A vote of thanks concluded the meeting.
