FOOTBALL.
An interesting fact in connection with the Ashburton County Rugby Union’s annual seven-a-side football tournament, held on Wednesday, was that the senior competition was won by a team from the local Southern Cross Club, comprised of the seven brothers Fitzgerald. Manawatu and Horowhenua can also boast of family seven-a-side teams, the Carrolls (Manawatu), and the Winiatas (Horowhenua). A match was to have been played between these two teams this season but it has apparently been allowed to fall through. Mr W. T. Parata, manager of the Maori team which recently toured Australia, has written to the New Zealand Rugby Uuion applying for the Union’s permission for a representative Maori team to visit Great Britain in 191 1. The matter will be discussed at the Union’s next meeting. The representative match, Wairarapa v. Southland, played at Masterton on Wednesday, resulted in a draw, 3 points all, after a most uninteresting game. During the present season a supporter of the Awahou Club signified his intention of presenting two trophies to the Club —one each for the best forward and best back. These have been won by Reid (forward) and Broughton (back), and are to be presented shortly.
