A TOURIST TRACK.

FROM WOODSIDE TO MX. HECTOR. Assistance in making a tourist track from Woodside to Mount Hector was urged by a deputation from Grcytown, introduced to the Prime Minister on Monday by Messrs Buchanan and Field, M’s.P. A track from the valley to Mount Reeves is being made by the local committee, and the deputation asked for the allocation of £7O, accrued “thirds” from the Featherston County, to be applied tor the above purpose. The deputation also asked that a section of 30 acres of Crown lands be vested in the project, and also for the expenditure of a sum of £IOO to form a track from Mount Reeves to Mount Hector, thus giving a continuous track from Greytown to Otaki. A grant of has already been secured by Mr Field, member for Otaki, for work «n the Otaki side, from the point known as the Otaki Forks. Mr Buchanan urged that the Wairarapa had been left out in tha cold in regard to tourist matters, whilst Mr Field urged that the proposed track would be ot advantage not only from the tourist standpoint, but from the. stoek-track point of view. Another argument in favour of the track was that the Alpine scenery en route was in many respects equal to anything that could be found in any part of New Zealand. Owing to the absence of tracks, however, it had been reserved for enthusiasts. It was also pointed out by Mr Buchanan that the Acclimatisaton Society had been liberating deer there recently, and there were great possibilities of sport in the vicinity. The Prime Minister said the Featherston County Council should apply to the Laud Board to have the £7O of “ thirds ” expended in the direction proposed. It that was done he would be willing to make a grant ot another provided it was supplemented by local contributions amounting to He would look into the question of the reserve.—Dominion.
