POLITICAL NOTES.

Some members have “ scented ” a Licensing Bill for this session (says the Post), with controversial proposals. It is not thought that the Government will make any further attempt to get the views of any License-No-Liceuse conclave, but may be disposed to attempt to shape something acceptable to the general public. Strong opposition is assured in the House for any proposal for Dominion option by a bare majority. Some members, after weighing the work to which the Government is committed, decline to believe that there will be any time available this session for such a controversial subject as licensing (assuming that the Government’s intention is to appreciably change the present local-option law). Tha programme includes Land, Tramways, Public Reserves, Public Debt Extinction, Legislature Amendment, Crown Suits, Defence Amendment, Harbour Amendment, Local Government, and other Bills, which are likely to be debated lengthily. In addition, there are the Crimes Act Amendment and the Destitute Persons IBill, introduced iu the Legislative Council.
