Palmerston N. is still considering the question of a tramway. At last meeting of the Council, Mayor Nash said he had received a communication from a firm who were in a position to advance colonial capital for a tramway service, but failing the colonial capital they could get English money. They proposed to introduce a system of petrol cars, which would obviate a power house and overhead gear —exceedingly expensive portions of a tramway system. The cars would ruu up
to 16 miles per hour. At the present time Hastings was taking a plebiscite on the question of municipal or syndicate trams, and he suggested their example could very well be followed. The estimated cost of laying the trams under the sydndicate’s proposal compared very favourably with the engineer’s estimate on the same subject. Under the terms suggested the town could take over the system at the end of seven years, or at the end of any three years up to sixteen years, and thereafter at any time. The question is to be fully discussed at the next meeting. Advance Palmerston !
