FOXTON RACING CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING
The annual meeting of the above club was held in the club’s office last night. There was a fair number of members present: Mr W. E. Barber (vice-president) occupied the chair. The report and balance-sheet were read by the Chairman, and were as follow : The committee have again to submit for your perusal a very satisfactory balance-sheet, and beg to congratulate members on the success the Club has attained. Favoured with fine weather, good fields, and a record attendance for the annual race meeting, the Club have had a successful year. The meeting was held before the Government new taxation scheme came into force, otherwise additional taxation amounting to £l6B would have had to be paid. The receipts from all sources, not including the balance of £314 15s gd carried forward, total £2556 2s 6d, as against £2349 I2s for the previous year, an increase of £206 10s 6d ; this is attributable to the increase in the totalisator proceeds, the fees from bookmakers, and the gate returns, all of which show a substantial increase over 1908-9. The expenditure amounts to £2297 os Id, the chief payments being: Stakes £ISOO, salaries £132 I Os, printing and advertising £B6 15s fid. During the period under review the sum of £159 7s 9d has been spent on improvements and maintenance, which includes the new press room, additions and alterations to the caretaker’s cottage, and the installation of electric bells. Sets of chain and disc harrows have been procured for use on the tracks, the latter having received a liberal dressing of manure. We have to thank all officials for their untiring efforts for the welfare of the Club.” RECEIPTS.
Audited and found correct. P. Hennessy) A F. E. Jenksj Audltors - August 22nd, 1910. The Chairman in moving the adoption of the report stated that members had cause for congratulation on the healthy financial position of the club, despite expenditure of large sums for the improvement of necessary conveniences at the course. He also paid a tribute to the secretary and other officials who had assisted to this end. Mr Hunt, in seconding the motion, referred to the steady progress the Club had made in recent years. It was not long ago that certain members had to give a guarantee of .£7OO to the Bank. Now there was no occasion for that and he jocularly remarked that the bank should allow the club inteiest for the balance that was in its keeping. He spoke in an optimistic strain of the future. Dr. Mandl also spoke in a similar strain, and the motion was carried unanimously. The election of officers resulted as follows :—Patron, John Stevens Esq., (re-elected); president J. R. Whyte Esq., (re-elected); vicepresidents, Messrs W. E. Barber, F, E. Jenks, O. and C. Robinson ; treasurer, Mr Witchell; Clerk of the scales, M. W. Gray; surgeon, Dr. Mandl; clerk of course, Mr C. Peterson ; auditors, Messrs P. J. Hennessy and A. J. Kellow ; timekeeper, Mr E. Smith; hon, veterinary surgeon, Mr J. E. Cockcroft; stewards, Messrs Dr, Mandl, C. Hunt, W. Gray, T. Rimmer, W. Howan, Geo. Coley, and E. Ball.
The following new members were elected: Messrs Drs. Wilson and Martin, A. J. Kellow, H. Stunnell, P. Dumsden, G. Fowler, F. Nash and A. Signall. Dr. Mandl moved and Mr Hunt seconded, that the club’s rules re stewards be amended to read that any steward who absented himself from three consecutive meetings without a satisfactory apology forfeit his seat. —Carried. The question as to whether the club should erect a tea kiosk on the course, as suggested by the racecourse trustees, was discussed at length. Mr H. Thynne (one of the trustees) stated that the trustees had decided to contribute ,£2O towards this object. It was pointed out la view, of Impending legisla^,
tion, that to spend a large sum of money on the object named would not be wise at present. The cost of the building was stated to range from to ,£3OO. A resolution was carried to the effect that the erection of a tea kiosk be left in the hands of the incoming stewards to deal with. The question of voting a sum of money to the A. and P. Association, as suggested by the recent conference held at Matton, for the improvement of the breed of remounts or hurdle horses was discussed. It was decided not to take any action in the matter at present. Dr. Mandl moved that a hearty vote of thanks be accorded to the secretary for the excellent manner in which he had discharged his duties during the past year. He stated that Mr Keith had worked assiduously for the club’s welfare. Mr Hunt endorsed Dr, Maudl’s remarks and suggested that a bonus be voted to the secretary. It was unanimously resolved to grant the secretary a bonus of ten guineas and the resolution was carried. In acknowledging the vote, Mr Keith said he did not know whether he would be able to retain the position of secretary for any definite period. He had been appointed starter by a number of clubs in different parts of the Dominion, and these appointments may clash with the secretarial work of the club. Mr Keith decided, however, to let the matter remain in abeyance for the present. A vote of thanks concluded the general meeting, after which a meeting of stewards was held when routine business was discussed and accounts passed for payment.
