LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL.
WEST COAST REPRESENTATION. Wellington. August 17. Mr Newman, M.P., couched his lance in the interests of country districts in the House to-night on the question of representation of country districts in the Upper House. He pointed out that 90 per cent, of the wealth of the Dominion came from the land, and yet there were only eight land owners in the Legislative Council, out of fortyfour members. Particularly he laid stress upon the fact that the whole district between Wellington City and Taranaki was without a representative, and urged that a district that had made Wellington what it was was entitled to representation. Messrs Field and Guthrie, M’s.P., took up their parable on similar lines, the latter pointing out that the West Coast was ignored not only as a farming community, but also as regards its own interests.
