During his remarks on the Financial Debate, our respected Member said that his policy on the land question was : ‘ 1 Every man his own landlord.” Mr Newman, by that statement, meant to convey to the country that he was In favour of granting the freehold to all Crown tenants. He said, further, that the setting aside of land tor endowments was a subterfuge. Mr Newman’s views on the land question are not advanced. The policy of setting aside land for endowments is no subterfuge,
but a policy that oommeuds itself to every person who has the best interests of this country at heart. Not one foot of the fee simple of our national endowments should be parted with. These lands should be the basis of assured revenue for educational, old age pensions, and other deserving objects in the future. What is to prevent any man becoming his own landlord if he so desires ? He can purchase as much freehold as he wants in the open market if he is not satisfied with Crown leasehold.
