Something should be done by the football authorities to put the rugby rough down and out. It is impossible for the referee to see everything that goes on in the game. At Wellington last Saturday, according to newspaper reports, some very brutal work was witnessed during the progress of a game, and a player had to be taken off the ground suffering from a broken jaw. The referee did not see the incident. All true lovers of rugby will be pleased to know that the police have taken the matter up and as a result an information has been laid against Arthur (Ranji) Wilson, captain of the Athletic senior football team, charging him with having assaulted Duolri Calcinai, a Poneke forward, causing him actual bodily harm. Wilson, who is very popular in sporting circles, recently toured Australia with the All Blacks. It is reported that the match on Saturday was decidedly rough, and several players were injured. Spectators frequently called out regarding various players, “Put him off !” but the referee, Mr Fordham, apparently did not see any infringement ot the rules in the direction of punching or scragging. Before the spell ended Calcinai had to leave the field with blood flowing from his mouth. A subsequent medical examination disclosed that he had a broken jaw, and it is unlikely that he will be able to speak for a fortnight.
