It is now practically certain that a Licensing Act Amendment Bill will be introduced by the Government this session. Some days ago representatives of the Trade were in Wellington, and it is understood they interviewed the Prime Minister on the subject, but nothing regarding the interview has been allowed to transpire. It is hinted, however, that the new Bill will be to some extent on the lines of the famous “compromise”, arranged during the previous session by Dr Findlay alter meeting the representatives of both sides.
Mr D. Buick, M.P. for Palmerston North, and a well-known owner of racehorses, speaking in the House this week was referring to the abolition of the bookmaker when an interjection was made concerning the numerical strength ot straight-going owners. “ You get a racehorse or two and you will very soon see whether it is an easy thing to win races when you want to, and whether horses are run true or otherwise. When our jockeys and our trainers are not interfered with you will get a straight ‘go ’ every time. We have had it before, and we will get it again. The totalisator is an honest machine which gives an honest ‘go ’ on all occasions to those who feel inclined to back their opinion.”
