The Manawatu Herald. Tuesday, July 26, 1910.
It will be seen by a perusal of the report of the conference .held yesterday between the Foxton Borough Council, Manawatu County Council, Harbour Board and Harbour Board tenants, that the construction of the Beach road now appears within measurable distance, that is provided the local Borough Council approve the allocation for repayment of the loan as laid down by the County Chairman. The Manawatu County has definitely stated what it is prepared to do, the tenants have likewise expressed themselves, and the Harbour Board, provided the arrangement suggested is legally sanctioned, is willing to do its share. [lt now remains for the Borough Council to fall in with the proposals, and we see no reason why they should not do so. If they don’t, then we have it on good authority that the Manawatu Council will drop the matter. This step would be sincerely regretted by the Beach tenants, who have indicated the burden of taxation they are prepared to carry. If the Foxton Council refuse to shoulder its proportion of responsibility, not only would it be against the best interests of the town, but it would redound to its discredit. However, we think the Council will view the matter in a broad-minded way and that a special meeting will be called at an early date to decide its action, so that further time will not be wasted.
