FOOTBALL.
AWAHOU (0) V. AEBION (0),
The two local teams have put up a rather unique performance this season, having met three times in the sub-union’s competition for the Austin Banner, and on each occasion the result has been a scorless draw. Saturday’s game was not as interesting, from a spectator’s ppint of view, as the two previous games between these teams on account of the greasy nature of the ball being against back play, the biggest part of the game being confined almost entirely to the forwards. Albions were without the services of Dunn (three-quarter), and Cook (forward), and Awahou had some new blood in Matthews (three-quarter) and Hunt (forward). The weather on Saturday being wet was an advantage to Awahou, who rely mainly on their forwards to win a game. Albion backs are their stronghold, but they were unable to get going on account of the ball being hard to handle. The game throughout was keenly contested, and the play taken all through was slightly in favour of Awahou. During the second spell Robinson (Awahou) had the misfortune to receive a nasty kick in the face causing a severe gash over his right eye, and had to leave the field, Awahou playing fourteen men for the last quarter of an hour. In the last few minutes Osboldstone sprained his ankle rather badly which will incapacitate him for some days. Dr. Adams refereed.
Saturday’s match concluded the third round of the local competition, and the positions of the teams are as follows :
On Saturday next the fourth round will be commenced, Albion playing Manawatu on the racecourse. The first “rep” match for the local players will in all probability be played on Saturday, August 6, against Horowhenua at I*evin.
