YOUNG WOMAN MURDERED.

MAN SERIOUSLY WOUNDED,

TDK ROCKHAMPTON TRAGEDY

A terrible tragedy occurred in the heart of Rockhampton (Q.) recently. A distribution of prizes was to have been made at St. Paul’s schoolroom, and a. large crowd was gathering, including many children, when a young man, Arthur Davie, a well-known amateur jockey, and a resident of Rockhampton, shot a young woman, Emily Salisbury, dead, and seriously wounded a young man, Roland Hett! a well-known horsebuyer. Acting-Sergeant,-Detective Seymour, who witnessed the crime, arrested Davis, and charged him with murder. Detective Seymour said he was standing opposite the schoolroom speaking to a person when the latter called his attention to a man firing a revolver at another. Ho rushed across the roadway and saw Hett falling. When Hett was on the ground Davis (ired two more shots at him, and then ran to, the back of a buggy containing, among others, Emily Salisbury (23), a resident of Yeppoon, who was on a visit to a friend in the city. He fired at Miss Salisbury from the hack, and then rushed to tho front of the vehicle and fired two more shots at her. By that time ho (Seymour) reached the spot and closed with Davis, who snapped tho revolver in his face. When his right hand was seized Davis changed the weapon to the other and struck him (Seymour) twice on the head. Ho called assistance, and a civilian closed with Davis, who was then deprived of tho revolver. A crowd collected, and Miss Salisbury and Hett wore removed to tho friendly societies’ dispensary near by. Miss Salisbury was dead, and ho charged Davis with the murder. Davis replied, “She broke my heart.” Ho was then removed to the watch-house.

Drs. O’Brien and Stuart and also the ambulance were quickly on tho scene. Hett, who was still alive, was removed to the hospital, where it was found he had two bullet wounds in the stomach. There is a hope of his recovery. Ho is conscious, but in great pain. The body of Miss Salisbury was conveyed to the morgue, where a superficial examination revealed a- bullet wound in the back and another over tho heart. There wore two wounds in tho right hand, as though the bullet passed right through, and two wounds under the chin. Davis said, 'Tt is a pity you did not lot me finish tho job.” Seymour had a. terrible struggle before he succeeded in securing Davis. It appears Hett w as coming to town, and seeing Miss Salisbury in the buggy went across and spoke to her. When the first shot was fired at him, the bullet passing over his shoulder, ho closed with his assailant, but was ill, and foil to the ground, when two more shots were fired at him. The second bullet struck a largo pocket-knifo he was carrying, and was turned aside. Tho third bullet entered the lower part of the abdomen, and passed through.
