A PARAPARAUMU SENSATION.

Paraparaumu, on the Manawatu line, was the scene of great excitement, and some consternation on Sunday morning when it was reported that two armed youths had entered the house of a Chinese gardener and demanded, at the point of the revolver, his money orj his life. The Chinaman in question quickly retreated through the back door, being speedily followed by his two mates. Their cries alarmed the neighbourhood, and the youths disappeared. The Chinese, and one or two civilians, however, got on their tracks, and srarted in pursuit. One »f the youths, while being pursued by one of the Chinamen, is stated to have turned round and fired one or more shots with the revolver. The chase then ceased, and Constable Satherley, of Otaki, was at once informed. After telephoning to the police station at Wellington, the constable made for the scene of the excitement. Detectives Cassells, Kemp and Lewis also took a motor car, arriving atParaparaumu shortly after noon. The detectives found that Constable Satherley had arrested one of the youths, who gave the name of Frank Wilson, and later on said his name was Frank Dean. He was, it is stated, found with a six-chambered revolver in his possession, fully loaded. The other youth was also subsequently arrested at Te Horo by the same constable. He had a number of cartridges on him, and stated that he had thrown the revolver away. He gave his name as Charles Hatley, and later on said his name was Charles King. The two prisoners were brought on to Wellington on Sunday evening, and lodged in the cells at the Central Police Station. They informed the detectives that they came from Sydney, but subsequently admitted that they belonged to Petoue, Both will be charged at the Magistrate’s Court with attempted robbery under arms. Dean is 18 years of age, and King 17 years.
