HUNT AT HIMATANGI.
A very successful hunt was held by the Mauawatu Club at Himatangi on Saturday last. The weather was very nippy with a keen easterly wind, which seemed to freshen the horses, huntsmen and hounds up for run. There was a larger number present at this hunt than on the previous occasion. A number of spectators witnessed the run from vantage spots. The drag was laid by Mr D. Tennant on Fibre, through the properties of Messrs Farmer, Robinson Bros., and Geo. Coley. The‘‘kill” took place near the latter’s residence. The obstacles included some stiff jumps, but despite this fact there was only one spill of a minor nature, that of Mr C. Price the well-known local horseman, who was riding Mr Langley’s ‘‘Wild Duck.” The little animal h n never faced an obstacle before
Price, after much persuasion, j. it to rush a drain but it baulkea at the brink and the rider who was ready to assist it at the rise, negotiated the obstacle himself- Subsequently he schooled the animal over the difficulties. Another pleasing feature of the hunt was the ridine of the Misses H. Meads on Lulu, and E. Meads on Niobe. These two young ladies won the plaudits of the onlookers and huntsmen by doing the full run in grand style. The following took part: Huntsman Bennett on Merry Girl, J. Buick (whip) on Brown Ribbon, J- Buchanan (assistant whip), G. Shannon (master), J. Donaldson on Monte Lass, S. Lumsden on Rangi, R. J. Sexton on Flirt, R. McKenzie on Venture, L. Lumsden on Catchup, T. Buick on Kai Errin, A. Buick on Waimona, L. Carter on Himatangi, M. Hare on South Queen, W. D. Buick on Leo. Grand, A. Fee on Herrington and a number of followers.
Cheers were given for the property owners, after which the huntsmen were hospitably entertained at afternoon tea by Mr and Mrs G. Coley. Some excellent phonographic records and merry chatter whiled away a pleasant half-hour. The host and hostess were accorded three rousing cheers for their splendid hospitality. Among the most enthusiastic huntsmen in this district are the members of the Buick family, in whom the sport is inherit. Wairarapa people will remember the name of Buick connected with the hunts on the other side of the Tararua ranges years age. They are all first-class riders, keen judges of horseflesh and sportsmen in the truest sense of the word. The Manawatu Club will never lack go while the Buick family are connected with it. The next hunt in this district will take place on Messrs Robinson Bros, property, on the 23rd July. The “kill” will probably take place up the Lady’s Mile, so that all Foxton will have an opportunity of witnessing the run.
