THE “BOOKIE.”
A meeting of men interested in the immediate repeal of the bookmaker section of the Gaming Act was held at Wellington last night. It would appear that the “bookie,” who is looked upon by thousands of respectable people in this Dominion as an undesirable human parasite, k will be prohibited from plying his nefarious calling. The Government made a huge blunder when it legalised his business, but it now sees the error of its way. Mr Newman has given notice to introduce a Bill dealing with the subject during this session, and the Government also have the matter under consideration. The gambling evil is becoming very prevalent in this country and immediate steps are necessary to hold it in check. Of the two forms of the gambling evil with which this country is familiar, the totalisator is the lesser and it is only a question of time when that will go. For the present the fate of the raucous-voiced bookmaker is sealed.
