The Manawatu Herald. Saturday, July 2, 1910. “THE GLORIOUS FOURTH.”

The “Glorious Fourth” on Monday next will be remembered this year, not so much for its historical as the day on which two American citizens—a black and a white —will provide a bloodletting exhibition to settle the question of who shall be the champion heavy-weight bruiser of the world. Thousands of people will assemble from all parts at Reno —a town of some 10,000 inhabitants, in the State of Nevada —and pay anything from £2 to to witness these magnificient specimens of physical humanity punch each other senseless. The crowd will howl with delight at every telling blow the boiler-maker gets on to his black brother and vice versa. It brings to mind the Roman gladiatorial combats, somewhat modified, but if the mob could rule on Monday next it would be a case of “thumbs down.” It is stated that this will be the last of such contests in America. Boxing contests, properly conducted, serve a purpose, but prize-fighting is demoralising in every sense. Whatever the result of Monday’s bout it will tend to open wider the breach that already exists between the black and white races in the United States.
