KNYVETT CAMPAIGN.
A MILITARY OFFICER HOOTED. Dunedin, July i. A meeting in connection with the Knyvett case was held in His Majesty’s Theatre to-night, and was attended by about 150 people, Mr R. Brinsley presiding. Speeches were given by Messrs Armstrong, Peacock and Black, who spoke on lines similar to their addresses made in the north. Mr A. R. Barclay moved: — ‘ k That this meeting, having heard the facts ot the Knyvett case as set forth by the speakers from Auckland, expresses its strong opinion that Parliament should pass the necessary legislation to provide for a new and fair trial for Captain Knyvett; and prevent a travesty of justice similar to that of the Knyvett case occurring in the case of other persons who may be officially accused ol military crimes in the Dominion.” Lieut.-Colonel Smith moved as an amendment: “ That this meeting declines to take any steps that will hamper the Defence Department in the maintenance of the discipline of the forces of the Dominion.”
The chairman expressed doubt whether this was really an amendment, but Lieut.-Colonel Smith, amid hooting and boohing"from the audience that was distinctly hostile to his proposal, insisted that it be put. When it was seconded and put, he was the only man who voted for it, and Mr Barclay’s motion was carried.
