SATURDAY’S HUNT.
Focal residents will be afforded an opportunity on Saturday afternoon next to witness a hunt by the Manawatu hounds, at Hitnatangi. Hunting is an old English pastime, but in New Zealand the fox and stag give way to the “ drag.” The modus operandi is for a committee to lay out a course through several properties and over obstacles, such as fences, drains, etc. When this is done, and on the day of the “ meet,” some well-known huntsman lays the drag, which is accomplished by saturating the huntsman’s horse’s hoofs with oil of aniseed, and he proceeds over the course already prepared. When the “throw off” takes place the hounds pick up the scent and off they go, helter-skelter along the trail with the huntsmen in pursuit. The hunt, when properly conducted, presents a very fine spectacle, and is well worth witnessing. The “kill” will take place near Mr Geo. Coley’s residence, after which the huntsmen will be entertained by Mr Coley, whose genial hospitality is still talked of by those who attended the previous hunt.
