JOHNSON JEFFRIES FIGHT.
San Francisco, June 24,
All those connected with the coming prize fight have deserted San Francisco for Reno.
Jeffries arrived there on Wednesday and began gymnasium work immediately unmindful of the high altitude. His breathing was not affected, however, and he showed no sign of being tired after an hour’s vigorous training. Visiting experts were surprised and believe he is quite ready to fight now.
Some say there will be a long battle and others expect a quick ending. John L. Sullivan, the ex-world’s champion, was snubbed in the Jeffries’ camp. Corbett said he was not welcome and Jeffries would not shake hands with him. The reason is that Sullivan is accused of sneering at both combatants. Their friends are unable to patch up the quarrel. Johnson reached Reno on Friday. He has done little work in the last three days on account of transferring his camp from San Francisco. He says much work is not necessary, as he is in good condition.
Johnson has settled financial difficulties with his former manager (Little), by paying him ,£15,000. He has sold his share of the proceeds from the cinematograph pictures for ,£50,000 and Jeffries the same- Tex Rickards, the promoter, has sold his share for ,£25,000. The Governor of Nevada is expected at Reno on Tuesday to confer with the promoters. It is not considered there is any danger of interference.
