POLITICAL.
AUCKLAND BY-ELECTION. MY MYERS RETURNED. Auckland, June 16. The by-election for Auckland East took place to-day, and resulted as follows : —A. M. Myers (Independent Liberal), 31S0 ; George Davis (Labour), ioB7 ; Willliam Richardson (Prohibitionist and Protectionist), 754 ; R. W. Hill (Oppositionist), 309 ; G. J. M'Knight (Labour), 75 ; Informal 3»Mr Myers having secured an absolute majority was duly declared returned. There were 8370 names on the electoral roil.
Mr Arthur Millziner Myers, the new Parliamentary representative for Auckland East, is an Australian by birth, and was born at Ballarat in 1867. He was educated at the public school and later at Wellington College. When 16 he entered the employ of Mr Ehrenfried (his uncle). He later became manager of the Auckland branch of his uncle’s business, and till 1896 was actively associated with the firm. On its amalgamation with Brown, Campbell and Co., Mr Myers become managing director. He has been a prominent figure on the directorates of public companies New Zealand Insurance Co., His Majesty’s Arcade and Theatre Co., and Auckland Gas Co. In 1897 he was made a justice of the peace, and in the same year joined the volunteer force (he is now posted on the active list unattached, with the rank of major). Football, rowing, swimming, bowling, and other sports have claimed a considerable portion of his interest and patronage- His term of office as Mayor of Auckland was conspicuous for the inception of several important undertakings, pushed forward with characteristic vigour.
