THE JOHNSON-JEFFRIES FIGHT.
San Francisco, June 16,
Governor Gillet, of California, states that prize-fights are criminal. Sparring exhibitions are lawful if they come to a conclusion. He describes a prize-fight as a contest when there is an expectation of reward coupled with the infliction of some degree of bodily harm. Tex Rickard, a promoter, replied that if Governor Gillet opposes, he hopes to construct an arena, and immediately take the Salt Lake City or one of the Nevada cities.
The principals have agreed to sell the moving pictures for ,£30,000, the fighters taking ,£IO,OOO apiece, and Rickard and Gleason ,£IO,OOO. Rickard asserts that the buyers have not stipulated for the length of the match. The £30,000 will be paid if it is ouly a single round.
