BIG BLAZE AT MANGAWEKA
BUSINESS PREMISES DESTROYED. By telegraph—Special to Herald. Manoaweka, This Day. A disastrous fire occurred here at 6 o’clock last night which destroyed four business places and one dwelling, viz., Carter, jeweller ; Campbell’s hairdressing and tobacconist’s premises together a large billiard saloon ; Mrs Summers’ large private boarding-house and a butcher’s shop. The fire originated in the back portion of Carter’s premises during the temporary absence of the ow-. ner.
Carter and Campbell are insured but are heavy losers. Mrs Summers also loses heavily, she only had on the house and furniture.
There being no wind at the time of the conflagration, enabled a large quantity of goods to be salvaged. The buildings on the opposite side of the street had a narrow escape.
Other insurances are not yet available.
The fire has caused a great gap in that portion of the town.
