SUPREME COURT
At the Palmerston N. Supreme Court, Robert Patrick Daly, convicted of stealing a gold watch, was admitted to probation for two years.
The case V, M. Braund v. E. D. Hoben, editor of the Mauawatu Daily Times, wherein the plaintiff claimed ,£5Ol damages, for alleged libel arising out of a paragraph contained in the report on Millar and Giorgi’s fire, which occurred at the time of the Powelka scare. The paragraph is as follows: —“Mr Warner states that at Millar and Giorgi’s fire an individual claiming to be an assessor attempted to interfere with him in carrying out bis duty.” The jury retired last night and brought in a verdict for defendant. Judgment was accordingly given for the defendant with costs on the highest scale. His Honour stated that nothing had transpired in the evidence which justified the insurance companies losing confidence in Mr Braund as an assessor.
