FOOTBALL.
The senior match, Awahnu v. Albion, ordered to be played at the last meeting of the sub-union, was played on the racecourse on Saturday, and was one of the best games yet seen in Foxton. Albion played with exactly the same team as formerly, but Awahou had strengthened their team by the inclusion of Redgrave, Reihaua and Frankland. That these players made a difference to the strength of the Blacks is shown by the scores of Saturday and the previous Saturday. In the first game the greens piled up 15 points to their opponents’ nil, but on Saturday the game resulted in a draw, neither side scoring. Albion had the best of the first spell, and kept play almost throughout in Awahou’s territory, the Blacks having on several occasions to force to relieve the pressure. During this spell Haeana (Albion) kicked a goal from a penalty, but this was disallowed by the referee on the ground that it was not kicked from a spot in a parallel line with the mark. The second spell was in favour of Awahou, whose forwards played a far better game than the Greers’ vanguard. The blacks were awarded a number of free kicks within easy range of the goal, but their place-kicking was very faulty. Both teams played well on the defence, and the game ended without either side registering a score. Dr Adams refereed.
The first match between the English Northern Union team and New South Wales was played at Sydney on Saturday, and resulted in a win for the home team by 28 points to 14, The takings at the New Zealand v. Wellington match on Saturday amounted to ,£3lB.
Argument over Saturday’s senior game resulted in a match over 100 yards being arranged between Osboldstone (Albion’s half-back) and Scott (an Awabou supporter). The match was decided on the racecourse and resulted in a runaway victory for the wearer of the green jersey. The junior match Albion v. Awahou, played on the racecourse on Saturday resulted in a win for the former by 22 points to nil. “Jack” Woods a well-known Southland half-back has taken up his residence in Foxton and intends to don the green and white jersey in the near future.
