At the Presbyterian social on Thursday evening while the last item on the concert programme was being rendered, some person threw a hen in at the open window. The fluttering object lauded at the feet of some young ladies who were almost sent into hysterics. A number of the audience could not understand the cause of the commotion until they saw a gentleman carrying the cackling object out. To-morrow is Golden Sunday at the local Methodist Church. The special collections are entirely devoted to the work of the circuit. Deaconess Sister Moody Bell who is doing good work at Shannon will conduct the morning service, subject, “ Family Religion.” The evening service will be conducted by the Rev. Peter J. Mairs, subject, “The Prodigal’s Father.” Himatangi school Auuiversay services conducted by the Rev. Peter J. Mairs and Sister Moody Bell.
In the Supreme Court, Auckland, Mr Justice Chapman, in sentencing William John .Frederick Moore, a young man charged with a grave assault on a girl at Warkworlh, described the offence as one of the gravest crimes ever heard of, being attended with a degree of brutality seldom heard of in the Dominion. It was scarcely possible to conceive a worse case, so far as foulness and cruelty were concerned. He imposed a sentence of fourteen years’ hard labour and ordered two Hoggings, each of twenty strokes.
It will be of interest to telephone exchange subscribers to know that the department has decided to collect these accounts weekly from ist June, instead ot monthly. Accounts will be rendered weekly and only the number and value of the communications are to be shown in the accounts, thus ; ist June, sat 3d, 4at 6d, 1 at gd, 1 at 2s 6d and so on, and if payment of the account is not made without delay no further bureau communications will be allowed. This new system will not give the postmaster any discretionary power as he cannot render his accounts at end of each week unless all his accounts are collected.
