AN ELUSIVE MAORI.
* Auckland, May 24. Since March 27 the police have been trying to catch a Native named Karaka Rotaua, belonging to Waahi, who is charged with theft at Kawhia. On a warrant being issued for his arrest, Rotaua immediately took to flight and found refuge in the bush where it is supposed that he lived on food provided by the Natives under compulsion. Rotaua has been in the bush between the West Coast and Lake Waahi, and the Ranglan county police, as well as Constable Rock, of Huntly, have had several ineffectual hunts after him. The Natives of Waahi were decidedly afraid of Rotaua, several even going the length of buying weapons for their defence, while others would scarcely leave the vicinity of the kainga. On Saturday, . however, Rotana was reported to be in the vicinity of Waahi, and there he was met by a band of Natives w. * persuaded him to surrender to ft : police and thus avoid arrest by arce. Accordingly Rotana gave himself up and is now in Mount Eden Gaol, Auckland.
