THE PILOT RESERVE.
At Wednesday’s meeting of the Harbour Board, Mr J. G. Wilson referred to the timber in what is known as the ” Round Bush.” He said all was being destroyed and unless cut very soon will be valueless. He suggested selling the bush to sawmillers and using the money so raised in constructing a drain to connect with the one at present being made by his Council, The value of the whole reserve would be greatly enhanced by draining and if his suggestion were acted upon he thought it would be as well to hold over the leasing of the reserve for a period of years, and in the meantime lease it say for a couple of years until the drainage work was completed. After the draining was completed he was of opinion the rent derived from the property would be greatly increased.
The Chairman said that masters of vessels trading along the coast had informed him that the bush was very valuable from a shipping point of view, as it was one of their laud marks.
Mr Wilson pointed out that it was only a matter of time and the whole bush would be destroyed. Mr Stiles suggested holding the matter over until next meeting and in the meantime approaching the sawmillers in the district in reference to the sale of the timber.
It was finally decided to hold the matter until next meeting for further consideration.
