THE LATE MR BAUME, M.P.

Mr F. E- Ban me, M.P., who died at Nauheim, Germany, on Saturday last, was member lor Auckland East seat. The late Mr Baume was born in Dunedin on 13th June, 1862, and educated at the Thames High School, the Otago University, and the Auckland University College. On leaving school he entered into commercial and journalistic pursuits, but studied law, and in 1884 he became a solicitor and barrister. In 1891 he attained the E-E-B. degree, and in 1907 was made a K.C- In 1902 he vas elected ,a vmember of the House of Representatives for one of the Auckland seats, and has retained the seat ever since. He took a prominent 1 part in the public life of Auckland, having at various times been a member of the City Council, the Harbour board, and other bodies. He was keenly interested in educational matters, and besides being a member of the Auckland University College Council he was a fellow of the New Zealand University Senate and Chairman of the Parliamentary ' Education Committee from 1903 to 1905. In the legal profession he held several important offices. There will probably be a keen fight for the Auckland East Seat, rendered vacant by the death of Mr Baume. The candidates -mentioned include Mr Myers, an exMayor, Mr Northcroft, ex-S.M., Mr Parr, chairman of the Board of Education, and Mr Nicholson,, who unsuccessfully contested Grey Eynn against the Hon. Fowlds.
